ePaper technology offers significant potential for the future of digital signage in the carbon neutral era - reducing energy consumption, minimising waste and mitigating negative impacts on ecosystems. Consuming a remarkable zero watts when presenting content, ePaper represents a significant step towards carbon-neutrality.
As a digital alternative to paper posters, ePaper is ideal for applications requiring static, regularly updated content such as POS promotions, menus, timetables and wayfinding information. Where dynamic, always-on displays are inappropriate, but up to date information needs to be delivered, ePaper offers an enhanced communication method with compelling cost saving efficiencies.
Pioneered by Sharp NEC Display Solutions Europe, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to sustainable innovation, ePaper delivers outstanding visual quality without consuming energy during content playback. A power source is only needed when content changes or new content is uploaded to the device. Even then, ePaper draws only minimal energy via USB Type-C connectivity or an external battery. For this reason, the display does not need to be located near a power socket allowing high installation versatility. In keeping with Sharp/NEC’s commitment to sustainability, the frame is manufactured using recycled plastic material.
Even in exceptionally bright environments, the ePaper display impresses with remarkably brilliant images in full colour, enhanced by ACeP performance. Comparable to paper, there is no blue light nor reflection, creating a comfortable and accessible viewing experience.
Featuring an integrated System on Chip (SoC), the configuration of the device settings and the display of new content is easy and flexible through selected CMS partners or via USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, using an intuitive online tool or a mobile app.
Now available in larger sizes and outdoor-compatible solutions, ePaper’s sustainable advantages are accessible to many more applications. First exhibited at CEATEC in September 2024, Sharp/NEC’s innovative solution for DOOH applications was awarded the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award in recognition of its outstanding energy saving performance and suitability for displaying emergency information without reliance on a power supply. ePaper from Sharp/NEC has also scooped two Best in Show awards at ISE 2025 from Installation and rAVe.
