Security Vodcast: Securing AV Networks and Addressing Overlooked Cybersecurity Threats

In the third and final of our three-part security vodcast series held at the Kinly XR Studio, experts from across our industry explored the growing threats surrounding AV devices and the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures.

Moderated by our CISO, Don Gibson, hotseats on the panel were filled by Ahmed Shalabi, Senior Design Consultant, Audinate, Neil Fluester, Global Director of Technical Marketing and Alliances, Crestron Electronics, and George Pierson, Kinly’s Integrated Network Services Consultant. The experts came together to delve into the various risks that come attached with AV technologies including ransomware, identity theft and emerging risks such as QR fishing and Deep-TEMPEST.

To battle the seemingly endless list of new threats, the panel discussed how user education, collaboration between IT and AV teams and adopting security frameworks are crucial in achieving an effective security posture. They also highlighted the importance of proactive assessments and incident management for visual technology, emphasising that security needs to be an integral part of the design and implementation process, not an afterthought.

What you’ll learn:

Hybrid risks: The increase of AV devices transitioning to the cloud has amplified existing risks including ransomware, eavesdropping and more.

Proactive vs. reactive security: The experts advocate for a proactive security posture over a reactive one to better respond to emerging threats.

A new approach: Businesses should consider adopting a zero-trust approach where access permissions are strictly controlled and scrutinised.

User education: Understanding the importance of educating users and clients about the risks associated with AV devices and how to manage them effectively is crucial.

Collaborative security: Establishing close collaboration between AV integrators, vendors and organisational IT and security teams is a must for robust security strategies.

Legacy equipment risks: Legacy AV devices with outdated security protocols can pose significant risks and should be regularly assessed for vulnerabilities.

AI and cybersecurity: Leveraging AI technologies to assist in monitoring, analysing and managing security events in AV systems is becoming increasingly essential.

As technological landscapes evolve, security within the AV space is essential. By employing a collaborative approach, prioritising education and embracing monitoring solutions, AV professionals can minimise their attack surface against growing threats while ensuring seamless network integration.
