Beyond the Screen: Smarter Infrastructure and the Next Generation of Digital Signage

Digital signage is transforming what's possible for modern workplaces. Now part of an intelligent and complex ecosystem, it can power, manage and integrate business-wide content for elevated experiences and better business results.

One of the most significant shifts we’re seeing is the rise of the cloud-based CMS and remote device management. Cloud platforms such as bsn.Control enable organisations to centrally control entire estates of signage across head offices, regional hubs and satellite locations.

With real-time oversight and remote configuration, teams can now rollout updates, monitor performance and maintain consistency across every site. This is proving especially valuable for global or hybrid organisations where coordination across geographies can present a challenge. It’s also a major step forwards for operational efficiency and ensuring that messaging remains timely, secure and on-brand.

At the same time, media players themselves have undergone a transformation. Today’s models feature powerful GPUs that support 8K video, HDR rendering and complex real-time content. This kind of horsepower unlocks immersive applications, from multi-screen LED installations and interactive wayfinding, through to 3D content and other visually rich experiences. The future of signage isn’t confined to communication, its role is now being extended to storytelling, ambience and enhancing the overall environment.

Connectivity is another key driver of innovation. With technologies like 5G, Wi-Fi 6 and low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN), signage no longer needs to be hardwired into place. This enables more flexible deployment in mobile, pop-up or hard-to-reach locations. When paired with edge computing, displays can now process data locally and instantly react to triggers, whether that’s adjusting content based on foot traffic, weather conditions or time of day. This shift reduces latency and network dependency while bringing us closer to truly adaptive and intelligent signage.

Security and sustainability have also come into sharp focus. Enterprise clients expect signage platforms to be GDPR-compliant, ISO-certified and aligned with broader ESG strategies. From secure data integrations to energy-saving features like automated brightness control, today’s digital signage is becoming not only smarter, but more responsible. This is a natural evolution as signage moves deeper into critical business infrastructure.

A recent example that captures this integration in action is Legal & General’s move to the Interchange building in Cardiff. Designed to unify teams from two legacy offices into one eight-floor hub, the space features fully integrated AV systems, including digital signage powered by Onelan and displayed on Sony hardware.

The solution includes a striking 109-inch Leyard video wall in reception, floor-wide signage for internal communications and interactive wayfinding totems throughout the building. Here, signage isn’t an afterthought, it’s a core part of how the space functions, communicates and actively supports employees.

In the modern workplace, digital signage is no longer a standalone tool. It’s a vital part of the AV and IT ecosystem. It connects people, strengthens brand identity and plays a critical role in creating environments that are both functional and engaging. As the supporting technology stack continues to evolve, so does the potential for signage to shape the way we experience the spaces around us.
