Work consist of three components: a psychological, physical and a virtual component. In our first blog we addressed the psychological component, followed by the physical component in our second blog. In this final blog we elaborate on the importance of the virtual component of work, which comes down to the tools people need to have access to in order to work and collaborate (remotely). This varies from online collaboration platforms, document sharing, video conferencing tools to chat functionality.
Work consists of three components: The psychological, the physical, and the virtual. In this blog, we elaborate on the significance of the first one. The psychological component refers to the needs and challenges people experience in their work that affect their performance. It’s vital for organizations to get a clear understanding of those needs and challenges because it’s the key to an optimal working environment. By putting people first, companies support their most valuable asset: Their employees. It also helps strengthen the organisation’s status, which not only makes it an attractive workplace for existing employees, but also for potential hires.
The way we work together has been constantly changing over the years. We began by assigning each employee a fixed workspace. In the time that followed, we worked in spacious open-office environments — but that trend is also fading. Now, different spaces in a building are designed to match the type of activity that we want to perform. In other words: activity-based workspaces. Research by “Leesman” shows that activity-based working has a positive effect on collaboration and productivity. This blog will explore considerations required to choose the right activity-based workspaces for your office.
In order to make a productive and effective contribution to business objectives, good cooperation between colleagues, peers and customers is essential. Supported by trends such as: development in the labor market, technological progress and the fact that many organizations are increasingly active on an international stage, makes it so that collaboration is increasingly taking place at a distance. As a result, more and more offices are increasingly being designed for this. Of course, remote collaboration will never match on-site collaboration.
The way in which we work today, is a lot more dynamic than before. Nowadays we go to the office to meet colleagues, to work together or because we need access to technology that is more advanced than our laptop or mobile phone. Office spaces are adapted to this and are much better attuned to the activities that we want to carry out, which are what we call activity-based workspaces.
Progressive organizations will continue to improve their office environment, as to remain an attractive employer for both existing and new employees. But, also to be able to work increasingly efficiently and thus be more productive. Good cooperation in this is essential. The spaces in a building are increasingly being adapted to this. And the following technological trends will make a positive contribution to this in the next five years.
Having a laptop, mobile phone and access to the internet is often enough for most knowledge workers to be able to do their work when and where they want and to be able to contact their colleagues via the telephone, a video call or by collaboration using platforms such as Microsoft Teams. Technological progress makes this possible and easier, but labor market trends certainly affect how fast this progress occurs. Therefore, we will cover three significant ones in this blog.
The importance of collaboration in the work environment has never been so vital, yet creating effective collaboration can be challenging for all types of organisations. When people work together problems are solved faster, solutions are generated, and a culture of teamwork is created - but how do you create that culture?
